I watched a TV show last night and it got me thinking.
The show was about a pair of sisters who are performing singers and the show centered around their singing and everyday life. The youngest is 12 and she does her own make up.
The father of this young girl of 12 apparently is resigned to her tantrums of sulking and not speaking to people when she goes off mood. Other than that she seemed an ordinary sweet cheerful girl next door.
What got me thinking was this. There was one point where the camera focused on her sulk before and after she got on stage. The host commented how she switches and lights up for her audience. Without doubt, she loves being the center of attraction. In reality she wears another mask for her audience.
How I wish we all do not have to wear masks. We have one for our home, one at work, another for our boss, a different one for the office cleaner and yet another when we are on a beer run.
I remember my friend, Frank Regis, who taught me about masks. (actually I part attended his empowering workshop in the healing springs of mystical Mount Banahaw).
He said that we should have only one mask. Whether it is about how we want others to see us, how we see ourself or how we wish to show ourself – there should only be one mask.
However I feel this is wrong. Rather, I would try not to have any mask at all. Of course this is easier said than done!
